Logitech launches affordable video surveillance for tech geeks
Posted on Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 at 21:24 by Brett Haggard and filed under News.Logitech South Africa today announced two new additions to its line-up for the digital home in the form of PC-based security cameras that the company claims allows for do-it-yourself 15-minute setup; motion-activated e-mail alerts and free remote viewing on any PC with an Internet connection.
The cameras are available as starter packs or add-on cameras for both indoor and outdoor environments; and use Logitech’s ‘HomePlug’ technology, which connects and transmits video data over the home’s existing electrical wiring.
That means installation is done in three easy steps: Installing the Logitech Command Center PC software, connecting the USB receiver and plugging in the camera. HomePlug even encrypts the video, so it’s secure.
Logitech says that once the camera has been installed, users can immediately watch footage live or review recorded video that was triggered through the motion sensor.
The cameras detect motion and record video directly to the PC’s hard drive for easy playback and archiving.
The cameras’ functionality also extend into the mobile world.
The control centre can be configured to send the user an e-mail or mobile-phone alert the moment motion is detected. They can then log in to their password-protected online account to view live video online from an Internet-connected PC or a Windows Mobile cell phone – anywhere, anytime.
The system supports up tot six indoor or outdoor cameras in any combination.
Surprisingly, the solutions don’t break the bank either.
The indoor and outdoor master system will set you back about R4k, while the add-on cameras weigh in at about R3.5k.
