As for satellite comms, it’s horribly expensive and the thing to remember is that most communications, unlike legacy TV broadcasting, is TWO-way. The need for the upstream input channel is what really taxes satellite. And even for backbone transport, satellite is reliably more expensive than landline alternatives. Landline is more expensive in Africa than elsewhere, but Africa satellite is even more expensive than other satellite!
New satellite networks are presumably on the way which do promise to cut the costs: check out o3B as one example.
A rather cynical view of Google, gentlemen! The news is out that lots of other companies have also been routinely subject to this kind of espionage. I think China (and sure, other governments too) are going to need to learn to play nice, not just enterprises.
