Posted on Monday, June 29th, 2009 at 21:02 by Simon and filed under Podcast episodes, ZA Tech Show. Our group of technology enthusiasts this week includes Ben Kelly, Duncan McLeod, Brett Haggard and Simon Dingle, who congregate to discuss:
- Plagiarism and Wikipedia. Poor Chris Anderson.
- Seacom’s delayed launch.
- Pirate Bay suing for human rights infringements.
- Intel and Nokia’s agreement.
- Oracle, Sun, SAP, Larry Ellison and silliness.
- Windows 7 pricing.
- Telkom’s shocking results.
Our choice technologies of the week:
- Duncan McLeod: WeatherZA.
- Simon Dingle: Bento and Filemaker.
- Brett Haggard: Drobo.

Another tribute to tech-savvy cleverness.
The thing about the plagiarism and copy-right infringement theme: Folks like us (journos, writers, teachers) literally live to eat our words. So we tend to get very snippy when it appears than someone has taken the words off our pages (that is, food out of our mouths), and the internet doesn’t alter the essential character of the theft. It just makes it TONS easier to do. Should the RIAA try to crush little old ladies who clearly aren’t at fault by any reasonable explanation? Likely not- but lots of kids who smoke grass and sleep with each other in college are going to get thrown out for lifting a few paragraphs from some dusty old book, and until they get the point that thoughts are a product they’re going to walk around with this stunned look on their faces.
