ZA Tech Show: Episode 31
Posted on Monday, September 29th, 2008 at 6:28 am by Simon and filed under Podcast episodes. Our special guest on episode 31 of the ZA Tech Show is Chris Ross, managing executive for sales at Vodacom, and the man responsible for bringing the iPhone to the South African market. This week we cover:
- The launch of the 3G iPhone in South Africa this week.
- The HTC Dream G1 is the first phone to market based on Google’s Android operating system.
- Minister of Communications, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri was president for a day, thanks to the political turmoil in South Africa. And we survived, surprisingly. But Alec Erwin is gone, so perhaps we’ll get through the next year with power for our gadgets.
- The Cisco website was hacked recently, with all of the letters ‘t’ being removed from its content.
- Vox Telecom losing 30 million rand this week in a securities deal.
- Social networking service ‘E’ launched at Picnic in 2008.
- It was Jon’s birthday on the day we recorded, which sparked a discussion of his hate for… well… everything.
- Brett would switch to Windows for Digsby – which now supports LinkedIn. Hey, he said it.
- Iron – a streamlined browser based on Chrome, that improves browser security and adds support for the new WebKit. We also touch on Internet Explorer 8.
- Vista only boots on a single processor, unless you tell it not too. This conversation presented the perfect point at which to end the show…

Comment by ryan411, posted on September 29th, 2008 at 12:29 pmhi there how would I unlock my iphone3g imported from the states. Vodacom don’t know anything what does chris mean by any iPhone from anywhere can be unlocked here. Apple sa tell me it can be done
Brett, dude, thanks for the whole processor boot-up advice. It worked for both my Vista notebook and my XP desktop. In XP, you need to enable the /NUMPROC option and specify 2 processors – but it works just as well as in Vista.
Hi Simon. Thanks for the great podcast. Could you try and find out if Vodacom are going to try and sort out the lack of MMS on the iPhone, seeing that they loosing out on revenue. Also why the Games category is not available on the SA iTunes Apps Store?
Please do a small piece on the Samsung Omnia if one of u guys gets your hands on it
Would like to know how it compares to the HTC Touch Diamond, iPhone etc… for good measure. Thanks in advance!
Great show as always, this is fast becoming the best resource to catch up on what is happening in the tech world in SA.
Again, pls mention what you make of the HTC Touch Pro. Its not in SA yet but should be here pretty soon.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for episode 31. Informative as usual! I must say, I am extremely irate with Vodacom w.r.t. some of their policies and how this whole iPhone3G launch has unfolded. That pre-order web page was nothing but a waste of time for me, as they seem to have ignored me after the initial pre-order sms confirmation. Perhaps because I gave my cell number as an MTN number, but if they had taken notice, I also gave a Vodacom cell number as my alternate contact number. I will be ending my contract with Vodacom today as they make no effort to retain me as a customer and seem to be consistently more expensive than MTN for cellular contract offers.
Cheers, Ryan
