ZA Tech Show: Episode 30
Posted on Sunday, September 21st, 2008 at 00:40 by Simon and filed under Podcast episodes. We’re all about mobile and gaming this week as the ZA Tech Show crew is scaled down to three, plus some input from Trevor van de Ven of ZA Car Show fame. Under discussion:
- The new Microsoft Ad featuring Eva Longoria, Deepak Chopra and others. Jerry Seinfeld is nowhere in sight.
- Apple’s arrogance and walled approach to the iTunes Music and App store.
- Nokia lining up its next range of phones, hot on the heels of recent releases from the vendor. Clearly the competitive landscape is hotting up.
- The Apple iPhone arrives in South Africa this week, on 23 September.
- Other browsers are getting Chrome-like javascript support with SquirrelFish.
- And Chrome has been third-party ported to Mac and Linux.
- Warhammer Online is finally available as yet another attempt at competing with World of Warcraft.
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was released this week, with major media attention.
- More gaming news with the release of Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS, Acer’s Predator range of PC gaming hardware, the launch of ‘Life with Playstation’ for the PS3, and the approach of Guitar Hero: World Tour to compete with Rock Band.
- Twitter has a new interface, and Jon still doesn’t have an account.
- Our esteemed minister of communications, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has decided to appeal the recent Altech ruling in the high court.
And more…

As a fan I guess I’m allowed to criticise?
#30 was not your finest moment. The show really works when most of you are there. Low energy.
In any event, just a comment from an adman. An ad to the scale of the new ‘i’m a pc’ stuff doesn’t get made overnight. So they are busy rolling out a long-term, well-planned strategy.
Guys, in the discussion on cell phones, I’d like you to please include your views on the HTC touch pro. Its the HTC touch diamond with the qwerty keyboard.
In the discussion on qwerty verse touch, this phone has both. Would love to here a review when it gets to SA but for now, have any of you used the HTC Touch Diamond (without the qwerty)?
Thanks and keep up the great work. The show is a must-listen.
I’ve used the Touch Diamond and I own an HTC Vox. To put my recurring views on HTC simply – underpowered, full of bugs, over advertised.

Sorry. The perfect bureaucrat everywhere is the man who manages to make no decisions and escape all responsibility. Help me! There is an urgent need for sites: Stock option trading information. I found only this – stock market day trade. Stock trading, there is a tradingwhen between the company and money futures, and the setting and acquisition positions. Often you list use you must experience stock and available security, stock trading. Thank  Brenda from Ghana.

Second show in a row that I hear you guys waxing lyrically about Chrome’s strategy of placing each thread in a separate process.
Guess where they got the idea:

Beyond that, IE8 has some awesome search features – perhaps worth a mention.
