I have that exact scenario at my home and it’s NOT as difficult to manage as stated in this podcast.
I have the Axxess uncapped satellite package (been available for ages) configured on my router. This is used by every PC (5 of them) on the network. It is unshaped at night/weekends, but bandwidth limited during weekdays.
BUT, I have turned a little feature on in my router referred to as PPPoE forwarding or bridging.
This allows my secondary account (2GB Afrihost) to connect in parallel to the internet. I have this account configured directly on my XBOX and my gaming PC (Add new Broadband Connection on Win7).
For my XBOX it is great cause I always get a fully OPEN connection status to LIVE and low latency gaming 24/7 (provided I am not downloading anything on the other computers). The only time I disable it is when I want to download those huge demos overnight.
For my PC the account connection is enabled/disabled with two clicks whenever I want or need the better connection.
Just my two cents tips for those who care..
The new desk looks sweet! I pity Brett for carting it around the States!
Also, Jon sounds exactly like James May aka Captain Slow from Top Gear. And given Jon’s choice of car…
Great show again, on one of the picks this week TrickleStar is a great product, however its also one of those products that shows how we are getting raped in SA.
Take a look at the retail price of the product in US or Europe and then SA. $20 USD there and R650 here… over 3 times the price difference. Shipping and customs duty’s are not going to be a 200% increase.
I’m all for the local distributor making some profit, but why a 200% increase in the retail price.

Very interesting. Just some questions for your next episode perhaps:
1) How did the M-Web and other similar services impact the IPC (think Telkom exchanges)? Surely the higher usage on those accounts will ultimately impact even other ISP’s and other services (unshaped) as the exchanges strain under the new demand?
2) Could we perhaps now talk hypothetically about the impact of the M-Web decision on local communities. What will prevent a consumer to on-sell Internet access to his neighbors? Even if M-Web allows only a single instance, a clued up user could still implement a simple proxy solution. He could even recover his total monthly cost in that way
Thanks again for an interesting podcast.
